The Battle of the Frizz Part 1: DIY Frizz Reduction

This is part 1 of the "Battle of the Frizz".
Natural curls goes hand and hand with "natural" frizz. Often times it is the frizz that causes natural beauties to rethink their healthy hair journey. Before you run out and buy a relaxer, let me give you some background information on frizz. In short, frizz is a condition where the hair's moisture and natural oils are stripped away from the hair shaft. This frizzy condition can be caused by several factors. These factors include using too many products, excessive heat usage, and drying your hair inappropriately. These factors become especially pertinent after washing your hair. When you wash your hair, your cuticles open up in response to the warmth of the water. Therefore, your strands become increasingly susceptible to damage. The focus of this post is becoming frizzy from using too many hair products. Happy reading!!

Excessive hair product usage seems to be a rising epidemic in the natural community. As naturals, we frantically scour the beauty supply shelves in search of the miracle cure. We are in high hopes to find that one product that will magically give our hair added length, provide us with the perfect ringlets, and most importantly reduced our "natural" frizz. When we first embark on our natural journey we often have these unrealistic expectations. We harbor aspirations to have hair like "such a such" person. Only to feel discouraged when our hair doesn't live up to these improbable dreams. This leads to us using countless products in hopes that this "hair dream" will become a reality.  I hate to be the barer of bad news, however, this magical cure does not exist. Further, this excessive usage only leads to us having frizzier tresses. We have to accept that our hair will not look like anyone but our own, and this is not bad. We are unique, therefore, we will have hair unique needs.

On the brighter side of the equation, is that this form of frizz is easily corrected. As I mention previously your hair is at its most fragile state post-wash. Now I'm going to ask you to reach for a hair product from the under sink. Any one will do...Now look at the back of the container and browse the ingredients. I am almost positive that the list of ingredients is almost 4 lines long. If you pay even closer attention, one of the first 3-4 ingredients is some form of alcohol. If you have ever had the pleasure to use rubbing alcohol, it causes a drying sensation on your skin. Now ask yourself, if its drying your skin then what is it doing to your hair?
This factor can easily be rectified by becoming more conscious of the products you use. Try to find products that do not contain alcohol and are more natural. Though, I advise you that just because a product says its 100% natural doesn't make it so. Educate yourself on the common ingredients used in your hair products. The most important factor to remember when selecting hair products is finding one that works the best for you and your haircare needs.

In the interim I provided you with a recipe for a DIY frizz Reduction.

Here is what you will need:
1 Banana
1 Tablespoon of Olive oil
1 Shower Cap
1 Blender
Instructions
  1. Part  your (dry) hair into 4 sections and secure them with clips or hair bands.
  2. Next place the ingredients into your blender. Blend the ingredients until they form a paste.
  3. Take this paste and distribute it through your parted hair from roots to tips.
  4. Next, take your masked hair and wind it into a bun to keep your hair from dripping. Place the shower cap over head.
  5. Let 30 minutes elapse and then go through the process of rinsing, shampooing, and conditioning.
  6. Post wash, be sure to apply a moisturizer to lock in extra moisture.
Note:
This recipe can be utilized 1 to 2 times a week, depending on your individual hair needs.
